F 1c Diamond was born in Springville Feb. 6, 1921, and attended at-tended schools in this city. He entered the Navy from Springville Spring-ville in December, 1943 and trained train-ed at Farragut, Ida., at Norfolk, Va., and at Fort Pierce, Fla., before be-fore being assigned to overseas (Continued on Page Ten) 'PEACE Oil THE SPOT... (Continued from Page One) Four. For it is obvious that wars are never started by the little nations. na-tions. SIDELIGHTS: Molotov was very game over his first parliamentary defeat, and showed no bitterness as he frankly frank-ly discussed the question with the press later ... He made a hit with the press. It is rumored that Anthony Eden Ed-en will have to leave the conference confer-ence about the middle of May. He is very popular here. The first Chinese pres conference confer-ence was a humdinger, with some wise and witty remarks from all of them, from T. V. Soong to the Communist representative Tung Pi-Wu. With Oriental humor, Tung was asked to stand up to "see if he looked dangerous." . . . There will . be "oil for the lamps of China." STACATTOS: Navy Lieut. "I have just returned re-turned from Europe, where I stumbled through hell. I've seen my buddies' arms and legs fly through the air death all around me. This conference must make the peace machinery OR ELSE" Taxi-driver: " don't like ta see the liberty of service-men curbed to make room fer these bloomin' delegates, no how. Whose fight is this anyway?" Yay, brother! T. V. Soong: "Yes, we have had peace feelers by the dozen from the Japanese in the past. We told them we would talk to United Nations. We will not discuss it along . . ." Oriental wisdom. Lityniski speaking for Polish government in exile. "Why aren't newspapermen permitted in Poland, Pol-and, so that they may accurately record the will of the people there?" We ask: "Why is a crow?" Answer, "Caws." Kingsley Martin, London editor speaking in favor of Warsaw Poles: "We want a more democratic demo-cratic government." Maybe they might "go up a pole and come down a-rushin' ". Clergyman: "This Peace Conference Con-ference is the most important event since the birth of the Master." Mas-ter." Here's hoping he is right. It has, been a most exciting week at the conference. Molotov and Stettinius were often seen with their- arms on eacSi other's shoulders in a most friendly attitude atti-tude during a huddle. Ezequiel Padilla, heading the Mexican delegation, boomed out in a deep voice for an all-American solidarity including Argentina. And that problem child of South America was not even slapped on the wrist as she joined the charmed charm-ed circle. The undertone of the whole meeting seems to be: "No one nation can go it alone now the world is too small it IS truly ONE WORLD." Thinking people here admit that Russia is entitled to a good break when 30 million of her citizens are in the list of killed, wounded, prisoners pris-oners or missing. Says Harold Stassen, one of our delegates: "He speaks from a small mind who speaks " against the peace conference." The majority we have interviewed interview-ed are optimistic and positive, not pessimistic nor negative about it. That is the right thought. No good advertiser uses the negative or nagging approach. They appreciate appreci-ate the little poem: "A good thing to remember and a better thing to do, is to work with the construction con-struction gang and not the wrecking wreck-ing crew." PREDCTIONS: "Out on the end of a limb." 1 In the end a "picked" Polish government will be admitted under un-der a compromise. 2 A European solidarity bloc will imitate the all-American bloc that railroaded Argentina into the ring. 3 The conference will NOT deadlock before its close, as some croakers predict. Until another hectic week So long, folks! |
