Show Dawson Pledges Support To Utah Reclamations Project, At Rally Here A large number of Townspeople attended a Republican rally Thursday evening in the high school auditorium, at which Rep. ViIIiam A. Dawson, Republican candidate for reelection to congress and J. Leonard Love also of Salt Lake City, a candidate for the board of education, spoke. The meeting was in charge of Blaine Thorpe, Springville precinct Republican chairman. Phil Chris-tensen Chris-tensen of Provo, Utah county chairman, introduced the county and district candidates present. Judge Joseph E. Nelson was also a speaker. The meeting opened with the singing of "The Star Spangled Banner", and during the evening, Mrs. F. C. Packard and Mrs. R. W. Bradford gave vocal solos, accompanied ac-companied by Mrs. Maurice Bird. Rep. Dawson told the assembly that Utah's future growth was almost entirely dependent on the proposed multi-million dollar Utah central project. "Utah has reached the stage where it must have additional water if it is to progress pro-gress from both an industrial and an agricultural standpoint. At present, we do not have enough water in fact, when we build a factory today we must take out a farm to gain the needed water," he said. Will Provide Water In outlining the proposed $700,-000,000 $700,-000,000 Utah central project, Mr. Dawson said the undertaking would guarantee to Utah sufficient suffic-ient water to provide for tremendous tremen-dous expansion of agriculture and for the conceivable future expansion expan-sion of industry. Mr. Dawson said he had introduced in-troduced a bill during the 80th congress, setting up the .state of Utah central project , . and that Senator Arthur V. Wat-kins Wat-kins (R. Utah) had introduced a similar hill in the senate. "I want the opportunity of returning to congress to push this most important bill for Utah", he told the assembled group and noted that he is in a favorable position to do so by being author of the bill and by holding membership on the powerful reclamation committee. commit-tee. Republican Concepts J. Leonard Love said that all major reclamation projects in Utah were conceived, developed and approved by the Bureau of Reclamation during Republican administrations. He cited approval of Strawberry Strawber-ry dam in 1905, dedication of Echo dam in 1924 and dams of Pine View in 1932 and Hyrum in 1932. Deer Creek dam was approved in 1932 and extensions in 1931, even though actual adoption was not until 1936, he said. |
