Show Firemen Warn On Burning Leaves... Considerable expense to the city as well as individual loss could be eliminated by proper observance of simple rules in regard to the setting of fires this time of year, it was pointed out this week by Alma Fullmer, publicity chairman for the Springville Fire Department. Depart-ment. Warning townspeople against the burning of dry leaves near buildings or leaving fires to burn during the night is a dangerous practice and one which often results re-sults in a dangerous blaze, Mr. Fullmer commented When a rubbish rub-bish fire gets out of control, the fire department is called and results re-sults in considerable expense to the city even when there is no property pro-perty loss, it was pointed out. Also Mr. Fullmer cautioned a-gainst a-gainst the accumulation of dry leaves and rubbish on roofs and gulleys on homes and other buildings build-ings stating that such accumulations accumulat-ions are conducive to fire started from chimney sparks. Such places should be cleaned before winter weather and the leaves carefully burned or hauled away. Another source of danger from fire is in wiring of homes and other buildings by inexperienced persons, Mr. Fullmer observed, stating that the fire at Ironton Sunday evening, to which the Springville department responded, resulted from improper wiring in a remodeled home. While the damage dam-age was held to a minimum by arrival of both the Springville and Provo departments, such a blaze could have been costly and could have been prevented entirely by proper electrical wiring. Whenever a fire is started, it should be watched and in no instance in-stance should it be started near inflamnable material or buildings or near dry grass by which it could spread. At all times keep matches beyond the reach of children child-ren and better still instruct them in the danger of fire. Observance of these few simple rules would eliminate the greater portion of loss resulting annually from fires, ; firemen report. |
