Show ONE OUT OF FIVE UTAHNS HAVE GOVERNMENT JOBS One out of every five employed persons in Utah works for an agency ag-ency of government, more persons than are engaged in either agriculture, agri-culture, railroading, mining, manufacturing, man-ufacturing, wholesale trade, or retail re-tail trade according to Research Report No. 24 just issued by Utah Foundation, the non-profit, tax-study tax-study organization. The report is based on the latest information available, in most instances in-stances Oct. 1946, and shows that only one state, Nevada, has a larger larg-er percentage of its population 'employed 'em-ployed by government. Other pertinent points brought out in the report follow: "Utah has a higher ratio of Federal civilian employees compared com-pared with population than any other state. (Both April, 1945 and October, 1946.) "Utah ranks tenth in the ratio of state and local government employees. em-ployees. (October, 1946.) "Utah is one of three states in which the number of Federal employees em-ployees equals or exceeds the combined com-bined number of state and local government workers. (October, 1946.) "The total payroll of all Federal state and local government employees em-ployees in Utah was $10,252,000, compared with total wages for all persons working in industry covered cov-ered by the unemployment compensation com-pensation program of $16,093,190 for the same month. (April, 1945.) "Estimates for October, 1946, indicate in-dicate that the total government payroll in Utah had declined to $8,798,000 or 39 percent of the amount paid to all workers in "covered" "cov-ered" employment, which increased to a monthly average of $22,479,532 for the final quarter of 1946. "Government workers received neary four times the total wages paid by the mining industry, and more than twice the amount paid by either the manufacturing or wholesale and retail trade occupations. occupa-tions. (April, 1945.) "For October, 1946, the ratio of government payrolls was three times the amount of mining pay roll, more than IV2 times that of manufacturing and 15 percent greater than wholesale and retail trade." |
