When the water temperature is lowr, such as during the full moon phase, the walleyes stir a-bout a-bout for longer periods and take a wider variety of lures. They provide' pro-vide' much sport when feeding heavily after dark, and then is when you should tie plugging ihe shores. Angling EAngles Ipf bi old Hi Among fresh water fish, the walleye is one of the highest ranking rank-ing as a fighter and a choice morsel mor-sel of food. Likewise, he is greatly , confused and eludes many anglers during the heat of the summer. In Canada he is sometimes pickerel, but more frequently tussels under the name of dore . . . . such as in the St. Maurice , I River where I've caught walleyes . while using lampreys as bait. In . various sections of the south you'll find that the walleye is referred to as jack or jack salmon. This fish is a member of the perch family and looks like an overgrown perch, ' but walleye is his accepted label. He moves in sizable schools, and grows to a possible weight of 12 or 15 pounds. His chief diet is minnows, but flies, bugs and other natural foods are rarely spurned. Walleyes prefer the cool depths . . . especially where rocky channels chan-nels or hollows exist . . . and are apt to remain there throughout hot days. In the evening, though, they'll come into the rocky or weedy shallows to search for minnows. min-nows. It is then that they become excellent targets for plugs and spoons, and this lactftvity continues con-tinues well after dark. ' One of the best lures, by far, for taking walleyes is the June Bug Spinner. This seems to hold true throughout most of the walleye wall-eye territory ( although the red-eye wiggler, striped spoon and green-and-yellow plug are also favorites. But when a pork rind strip, belly strip of a minnow or nightcrawler is added to the long shank of a June Bug spinner, you've got what it takes- On lowery days with the fish in the depths, you can get some action ac-tion either by still fishing with a lively minnow or by trolling with a spinner, flashing spoon or bright colored plug weighted deep. An archer spinner with six-inch live sucker is a good lure for large walleyes when trolled slowly near bottom. Walleyes are moody. Sometimes, where they are plentiful you can snag into one on nearly every cast of the plug or spoon, but more often you'll have to cast several |
