Show Orphans Have Fun A BOOK published recently, "Forty-Five in the Family," by Eva Burmeister (Columbia University Press), shows that there have been many changes in orphanages since the days of Oliver Oli-ver Twist. In fact, Lakeside Children's Chil-dren's Center in Milwaukee sounds like a real home and while the family is large, all are members of a real family. Once when Freckles, the dog, was lost, practically the whole city of Milwaukee pitched in to help find it. A case worker in juvenile court was stopped in the middle of a sentence by the judge who wanted to know if Freckles had been found. j Another time Larry, one of the boys, decided he would like to bake a cake. Petey the cook called out the ingredients as Larry followed fol-lowed instructions. But when the cook said: "A level teaspoon of salt," Larry thought Petey said "Eleven teaspoons of salt." But the girls thought Larry was quite a hero and so they bravely ate the cake rather than hurt his feelings. |
