Show A MODERN 4 HERCULES A friend has written me pointing out that what America needs today to-day is a modern Hercules. He sees a parallel between the job that confronted Hercules in cleaning the Augean stables and that which the 80th congress faces as it sets itself to clean up the mess created by 14 years of New Deal folly and ineptitude. You will recall that the stables of Augeas, King of Elis, were described de-scribed as the largest and dirtiest in the whole world. Hercules didn't fool with his task. He used his brain. He diverted the waters of the river Alpheus through the Augean Au-gean stables and did a thorough job of cleaning away the filth. The 80th Congress must do a like thorough cleaning job. An accumulated ac-cumulated mess of vile and confused con-fused legislation, smelling to high heaven, threatens the economic and social health of America. Provisions Pro-visions of the Clayton, Norris-LaGuardia, Norris-LaGuardia, Fair Labor Standards and Wagner Acts, among other laws and numerous court decisions, deci-sions, grossly violate the precept for sound government which was so carefully observed by the Founders of this Republic and by many succeeding generations of our law makers. But recently it came to be considered "smart politics" pol-itics" to make laws that award special privileges to minority groups, and especially to 'the leaders lead-ers of organized labor. A persistent belief exists among many politicians that leaders of organized labor can control the votes of their (members. Notwithstanding Notwith-standing Ithe absolute repudiation of the CIO-PAC at the polls last Nov. 5th, many of our legislators still cling to that erroneous assumption. as-sumption. It is feared that they will continue to follow the path of political experiency at the cost of grossly violating basic principles princi-ples for the government of free men. Yes, my friend is right America Ameri-ca needs a modern Hercules. Legendary Leg-endary Hercules cleaned the Augean Au-gean stables by turning the river Alpheus through them. A modern Hercules would turn the river of repeal through our accumulated mass of vile 'and confused legislation. legisla-tion. Nothing short of that will do the trick. A modern Hercules would bring about the enactment of a new National Labor Relations Act, which would adequately protect the legitimate interests of the consumer con-sumer ('.that's all of us.) This Act would be so drawn as to award no special privilege or immunity to any group or, individual. Such a 20th Century Hercules who would really go to work with his ibrain, would achieve popularity popular-ity and win the undying gratitude of the American people such as old Hercules enjoyed among the people of ancient Greece. But is there a modern Hercules among our law makers ? Will fancied political bad Americanism. A people who hold such opinions opin-ions do not believe in legislation which favors one group over the others. They would cheer to the echo a modern Hercules who would tackle the job of bringing about repeal of any and all destructive, un-American laws. expediency continue to override the principles of true statesmanship? Contrary to the belief of many of our politicians, the American people are not stupid. A survey recently re-cently published by the Psychological Psycho-logical Corporation shows that a substantial majority of our people peo-ple in all 'classes union members and non-union workers alike believes be-lieves that the "Closed Shop" is an un-American institution. The same survey discloses majority belief in individual responsibility as opposed op-posed to meddling government; :that private capitalism and the profit system represent good Americanism; (that government ownership, he it large or small, is |
