Show COUNTY OPPOSES PROPOSED NEW SUPER HIGHWAY Unanimous opposition to the proposed pro-posed superhighway by-passing most Utah county towns was voiced Friday at a meeting of 37 mayors and community leaders in the county commission chambers, rovo. Attending the meeting from Springville were: G. Lowry Anderson, An-derson, Al Thorpe and J. A. Miller from the chamber of commerce, and Ed. Johnson, representing the city. Representatives apparently were all of the opinion that U. S. highway high-way 91 will always be heavily traveled as long as the communities communi-ties exist, and that the existing highway traffic problem can be rectified only if highway 91 is brought up to modern four-lane standards. They emphasized that if the state has enough money to construct a superhighway, it has enough to improve first the existing exist-ing highways which are so badly in need of improvement. Several of the mayors indicated their desire to. meet with representatives repre-sentatives of the state road commission. com-mission. The group voted to ask this body to arrange a meeting in Provo at the earliest possible date. Representing Utah county interests inter-ests at this future meeting will be the mayors of the eight major communities, presidents of all civic clubs, county commissioners and ' other interested persons. A five-man committee was appointed ap-pointed to collect information concerning con-cerning the traffic problem, the need for highway improvement, j and other facts in preparation for the meeting. Members are Mayor Mark Anderson, Provo; Glen L. Taylor, American Fork; Mayor Wallace Gardner, Spanish Fork; Dale Despain, Utah county planning plan-ning director, and Clayton Jenkins, secretary - manager of the Provo chamber of commerce. During the meeting, Mr. Jenkins Jen-kins and Mr. Taylor expressed the opinion that, although no commitments commit-ments have been made by the state road commission, the super-highway is scheduled to be under construction con-struction as soon as the weather makes it possible. They urged prompt and forceful action on the part of Utah county interests to block the move. |
