Show "ft REMEMBER" k BY THE OLD TIMERS I From Mrs. Mary Stewart of Chicago: Chi-cago: I remember when the papers pa-pers had pictures of the Battleship Maine in the Sunday picture supplements, sup-plements, done in shades of blue. It seems every householder on the street had a copy pasted in his front window and there it remained re-mained for months. It was captioned, cap-tioned, "Remember the Maine" and school boys in quoting that would add, "And to h with Spain." From Estelle C. Laughlin of Ger-injr, Ger-injr, Neb.: I remember when columns col-umns in newspapers and magazines maga-zines were devoted to the subject, I IS BOBBED , UKs6 "Is Bobbed Hair Here to Stay?" and the new cloche hat fitting our heads like -upturned bowls forced I us to cut off our "crowning glory" and risk our employer's displeasure dis-pleasure and perhaps dismissal. From E. E. Meredith of Fairmont, W. Va.: "I remember when newspapers published'r a i 1 r o a d timetables . . . when we would go to see people instead of "contacting" "contact-ing" them . . . when a market basket was carried on the arm before the day of carry-alls . . . when the movie comics carried lighted bombs through a reel or two which blew up at the final scene . . . when torchlight parades featured political campaigns and Republicans displayed coons and Democrats displayed roosters by way of variety ... From Zora B. Stegenga of Chicago: I remember the home-made combing jackets. They were made out of large-size towels and were worn when shampooing and comb ing the hair. |
