Show ! -PEEK- I By JOXES JEYELKY DIAMOND CUTTING Let's take a PEEK at the art ,of cutting diamonds, which must be carried on by expertsrThis industry ,fr llil '3 centred most-fE, most-fE, I 'y i" Antwerp and jj an(' Amsterdam. 4Vl 7IW n a larse vj My stone is to be i &fy divided, it is (jj studied by the s cutter sometimes for as long as a year or more. Faint patterns of structure and cleavage are traced on the gem with ink to aid in the job. If the stone is to be split in the direction, of the natural cleavage a small groove is usually sawed with great care, and then a steel ruler or chisel is held in place and gently tapped with a wooden mallet. If the calculations are correct, cor-rect, the stone will fall apart, but if a mistake has been made, it will shatter into many pieces and thus be ruined. A diamond may be sawed in any direction or any part and this is accomplished with a thin disc of phosphor bronze, to which diamond dust and oil are applied. The piece must then be polished and faceted. Since a diamond is the hardest known substance, this faceting must be done with another diamond. The facets in a stone determine its value and brilliance. This meticulous work sometimes takes nrany weeks for a large stone. When the project is finally finished, the stone usually weighs about half of the original and is commercially a perfect diamond. -PERFECT . . . that's the comment that's made about JONES JEWELRY'S diamonds.
