Show State Soap -Box Races Planned Sat. at 9 a.m. Forty junior-sized hotroders Saturday will join forces with gravity on derby hill at Fourth South and Ninth East to vie for college scholarships and mer- program, where special instruct tions will be given and a short movie on the' derby shown. Trial runs, to give the contestants contes-tants a chance to test their cars and the runway, will be held Friday, Fri-day, also. Best parking area for onlookers will be along 8th East street between be-tween Center and Fourth South, according to derby officials. In addition to first place prize, a prize for second place and one for the fastest heat will be given. A special award will be presented to the boy who has the best constructed con-structed car. The award will consist con-sist of hand tools and wall board furnished by Shell Oil Company. Another special prize will be given to the boy with the best upholstered car. Although the name of this event is the Soap Box Derby, any resem-plence resem-plence between a soap box and the sleek, freshly painted auto that leaves the staring line, is purely coincidental. Safety precautions, and maximum maxi-mum and minimum specifications for such things as road clearance, room, for the driver, brakes, and steering systems are big hitchs in derby plans of contestants. 9 T chandi.se awards in the 18th annual an-nual Utah Soap Box Derby. Boys from as far away as Cedar City on the south and Brigham City on the north, will start rolling roll-ing down the 1000 foot track at 9 records achieved in his Mormon Meteor on the Bonneville Salt Flats. . Biggest hinderance to the boys baturday morning to decide who will advance into the national finals fin-als to be held at Akron, Ohio. The derby will be divided into two divisions, A and B. All boys eleven and twelve years old will compete in class B. Contestants thirteen, fourteen, and fifteen years old will roll down the runway run-way competing in class A. Winners of each class will race in the finals fin-als to decide who receives the T. H. Keating trophy. Presenting the trophy will be Ab Jenkins, holder of. many speed is friction, but reports from the hill indicate that some of the contes-tents contes-tents have just about eliminated excessive friction. One "bug" sped down the hill at a 30 mile an hour clip, which is pretty fast rolling for four wheels and a box. Although the race does not start until Saturday, derby events will begin Friday at 5 p.m. with a derby der-by parade in front of the high school.
