Show New Homes Should Feature Safety Says Specialist- Thousands of new homes have been built in the last few years with little or no attention to accident ac-cident hazards. Home accidents cost Americans more than $600,000 annually in wage loss, medical expense ex-pense and insurance overhead. S. R. Boswell, agent with the Utah Extension Service, says it's a good idea to check house plans carefully for every possible accident acci-dent hazard. Watch the slant of the stairs . . be sure there are hand railings; use adequate insulation around furnaces, pipes, fireplaces and the chimneys; have plenty of wall plugs . . . install electric switches at top and bottom of stairs and in bathrooms. Arrange kitchen equipment to eliminate fatigue; build plenty of storage space for family needs . . . especially utility util-ity and cleaning closets. Have medicine med-icine chests that can be locked and out of reach of children. S. R. Boswell says to get expert advice when building so that accident ac-cident causes are built-out. Even when remodeling, these hazards often of-ten cannot be corrected. Home plans for building and remodeling re-modeling may be obtained from tho county extension agents. |
