Show SWEETEN TOMATO PLANTS BEFORE TRANSPLANTING Here's a stunt that may save some tomato plants for you. this spring, says Farm Journal. Before you transplant tomatoes to the garden wet the leaves thoroughly thor-oughly once a day for three or four days with sugar and water, plus half a teaspoonful of detergent, deter-gent, such as used washing dishes. Use about 15 ounces of sugar (this amounts to about 2 1-3 cups) to a gallon of water. Two University of California men, Dr. Paul G. Smith and Frank W. Zink, have found that this "sweetening up" cuts down the shock of being transplanted, especially es-pecially when transplanting weather weath-er is dry and hot. Why the detergent? Well, it makes the spray spread and cling to the leaves longer so the sugar su-gar can be absorbed. - |
