Show Expert Advises , On Ways To Raise Healthy Pullets As a healthy flock of pullets will give many times the profit of a mediocre lot, spending a few cents more for equipment, labor, litter, heat, and medication will pay high dividends, Joel C. Barlow, agricultural agricul-tural agent said today. Also, good management practices practic-es should be observed, Mr. Barlow Bar-low said. First, chicks should have plenty of room, as crowding is the number-one cause of poor laying performance. Plenty of room also means plenty of hopper space, he said. There should be enough hoppers hop-pers so that by filling them half full the chicks will have enough feed for one day. Chicks should have plenty of air, and a deep dry litter. Opening the house windows may cost 'more in heat, but will pay for itself in better birds, and a deep dry litter will minimize disease and parasite problems. Disease and worm control are important considerations in raising rais-ing good birds. To control coccid-iosis, coccid-iosis, the procedure is usually simply sim-ply a matter of feeding medicated feeds; or if chicks go off their feed for some reason, the water should be medicated as well. All pullets should be immunized .against both fowl pox and Newcastle New-castle disease, Mr. Barlow said. |
