Show Red Devils Move into Quarter -Finals; Meet Pleasant Grove at Lehi Friday Coach George Pehrson and his Springville Red Devils moved into the quarter finals, of the class B prep football picture as a result of a 14-0 victory over the Lincoln Tigers here last Fri- day afternoon and will meet the undefeated Pleasant Grove Vikings Vik-ings on the Lehi field Friday. Kickoff time has been set for 2:30 p.m. Springville won the Nebo division divi-sion title while Pleasant Grove moved up in the pigskin sport for the first time in many a moon to take the Alpine title very handily. From previous scores, the Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove eleven possibly has a brighter picture than the Springville Spring-ville Devils. The Grovers also boast the speediest backfield in the region which has been their big. gest victory factor. Whether or not the Red Devils can hold this back-field back-field speed in check Friday, will determine whether or not they can come up with a win. Coach Pehr-son's Pehr-son's team looked good against the Lincoln club Friday and with a bit of luck and good defensive tactics, tac-tics, they should come up with a win. The winner will play the P Moab-Millard winner in the semifinals semi-finals the following week. Devils Down Tigers . . . Springville, in a repeat performance perform-ance of last year, won over the Lincoln eleven in their Friday battle bat-tle for the Nebo championship here. Coach Pehrson's eleven dominated dom-inated play throughout the game despite an opening kickoff fumble on their own 28 which gave the Tigers a golden opportunity to score. The Springville line held and by the third down, the Tigers found themselves pushed back to near midfield. The Red Devils came back after the punt, but the Tigers held and after an exchange of punts with neither team making any appreciable gains, Gordon Livingston Liv-ingston started a Red Devil drive with an end run which was duplicated dupli-cated around the other end by Don Tuttle. A fumbled ball was recovered recov-ered by the Devils on the Lincoln ten and with only seconds left to go, Don Parker carried the ball to5 a first down on the six-inch line as the quarter ended. On the second play of the second sec-ond quarter big Don Tuttle crashed crash-ed over for the initial touchdown of the game. Garth Whitney, who has played outstanding defensive ball all year, booted the extra point squarley between the uprights up-rights and the Devils moved out in front 7-0. Lincoln was unable to gain any ground after receiving the punt and likewise held the Devils on their try. Springville made its break to pave the way for another an-other touchdown when the Tigers had moved to their own 45 and tossed a long pass which Fullmer beautifully intercepted and returned re-turned to the 50. On two consecutive consec-utive nicely executed pass plays, the Devils moved to the Tiger 25 yard line and then with only seconds sec-onds left to go in the first half, Fullmer tossed a beautiful 40 yard pass to Eldredge on a trick play and he dove over the goal to score as the clock run out. Again the steady toe of Garth Whitney booted boot-ed the extra point to leave the Devils 14-0 ahead of the Lincoln eleven at halftime. On the kickoff to Lincoln in the third quarter, the ball carrier took the ball on his own 16 yard line and slipped to the ground in an attempt at-tempt to return the punt. Kay Cook plowed through the Tiger wall to stop the Lincoln drive and Lincoln was forced to kick out of danger. Springville lost 5 yards and then Tuttle picked up a first down to the Lincoln 41. Watts made a nice gain for another first down, carrying the ball to the 26 on a reverse play. Simmons took Eldridge's pass and moved to the 10 yard line. Livingston hit the center of the line to carry the ball to the 5. Tuttle, in his goal line drive, fumbled on the 4 and Lincoln Lin-coln recovered. Lincoln carried the ball to mid-field as the quarter ended. Not until late in the final quarter quar-ter did either club do much ground gaining as play was on a more even basis. However, Springville started a belated drive with Tuttle doing some fine running along with Eldredge which took the ball to the Lincoln 29 as the gun stopped stop-ped the drive. Defensively, Whitney, Cook, Blanchard, and Stewart looked particularly good while Tuttle, Liv ingston, and Eldredge played outstanding out-standing and were assisted with some nice playing by. Watts and Fullmer. Springville's lineup for the game included ends: Calvin Thorpe, Lynn Ash, Kay Cook, Howard Stewart; tackles: Garth Whitney, Gene Tip. petts, Gary Tipton, Richard Rawle; guards: Gary Rothlisburger, Bill Bleggi, Kent Burt; center: Rex Blanchard; quarterback: Richard Watts; halfback: Don Tuttle, Marvin Mar-vin Fullmer, James Simmons, Larry Lar-ry Eldredge, Don Parker; Fullbacks: Full-backs: Gordon Livingston, Harold Kunze and Ross Steffens. |
