Show Utahn Says Crop Limit Necessary SALT LAKE CITY, Nov. 23 (U.K) Impending farm poverty and lack of concerted action in Washington Wash-ington to pass needed agricultural agricul-tural legislation threaten a nation-wide depression, David F. Smith, Utah State Agricultural commissioner, said today. Smith returned today from a conference of state agricultural commissioners in Washington, where, he said, delegates painted a "pessimistic" picture of agricultural agri-cultural conditions. Only factor which can stave off the threatening condition is co-operation among farmers to limit crops. Under present unrestricted un-restricted production, it is rapidly' rapid-ly' becoming impossible for farmers farm-ers to realize cost of production on their crops, he said. Congress Was Warned "Congress had full warning of this situation nine months ago," Smith said, "but they failed to pass the needed legislation." Compulsory limitation on the order of new deal "plowing under" un-der" cannot succeed in saving the farmer, he said. Only remedy will be voluntary limitation by the farmers themselves, he declared. de-clared. Congress will have to pass laws providing for such crop limitation limita-tion or farmers will be afraid to take the initiative to save their markets. He predicted that no farm act could be passed by congress before January because of lack of unity among would-be farm legislators and the generally disorganized dis-organized condition of national politics. |
