Show SOX AND REDLEGS CAN MAKE READY FOR BIG SERIES By WILLIAM HILLMAN. Universal &orvlc Staff Correspondent. NEW YORK, Aug. 27. The Chicago White Sox tonight led the American league race by eight full games, and It is a pretty good prediction to say now that the world's series will be played by Gleason'a men and the Cincinnati Cin-cinnati Reds. The Tigers for a time threatened to cut down the lead of the White Box, but following yesterday's and today's to-day's defeats by the Indians only a miracle brand of baseball can win for either the Tigers or Cleveland, who slipped into second place. The White Box have twenty-six more games to play to complete the season's schedule. Reverting to statistics, sta-tistics, which seem to be the popular thing at this stage of affaire, we find: The White Sox have won thirteen I out of their last fourteen games, a I winning percentage of about t5 per cont. Allowing for the unexpected, which as a rule is expected, the White Sox should be able to win at least thirteen games of the remaining twenty-six, or continue the rest of the season at a pfice of 50 per cent. A team that leads the league at this stage of the game Is not going to do any worse, unless a train wreck or something mutilates half of the club. In order to beat out the White Sox at this pace, the Cleveland team will have to win twenty-two out of the remaining twenty-eight games yet to be played. The Tigers will have to win twenty-three out of twenty-eight games. The Cincinnati tRedS can now turn their attention to the world's series. There is scarcely any change of the Giants, who have been playing rather, fine ball, overtaking them. The Giants gained a half game on them today, but thev still lead by a margin of eight and a half games. |
