Show GARY DECLINES TO RECOGNIZE UNIONS NEW YORK, Auar. 27. Elbert H. Gary, chairman of the board of the United States Stoel corporation, made public n communication sent by him to a com-' mittee of the American Federation of L,abor. which Is organizing workers In j the iron and steel industry, asserting that his corporation would decline to discuss dis-cuss business relations with trade unions as such. Before receiving the reply of Mr. Gary, members of the committee intimated that they would make an appeal to President Wilson if they failed to e:et a hearing from officials of the steel corporation. Mr. Fitznatrick declared tha,t no strike date had been set. Other members of the committee asserted that they would not discuss a strike until all efforts to adjust ad-just differences amicably had failed. ! Mr. Gary's letter was handed to Mr. i Fitzpatrick at the Continental hotel. Mr. ; Fitzpatrick with other members of the committee immediately retired to the suite of Samuel Gompers to consider a reply. |
