Show MAIDS MAKE DEMANDS. The cooks, maids and servant .girls of Chicago have formed a union and agreed to demand a ten-hour day and a five and one-half-day week. Delegates Dele-gates selected by the members of the new union will discuss the demands with the Housewives' league and women's clubs of the Windy City, according ac-cording to the ' press dispatches. If the housewives and club women are able to reach an" agreement with the cooks, maids and servant girls, they will show superiority in a new field of endeavor and will be able to point the way for the male employers of labor. However, the conference has not been held, and it may bo that the girls and women wno do housework for a living will be just as hard to handle as coal miners and steel workers, and that they will go out and remain idle until their demands are met, in which case the daughters belonging to' well-to-do Chicago families may make the acquaintance ac-quaintance of broom, dustpan and dish towel. But unless we are sadly mistaken, mis-taken, the union ladies will not have it all their own way when they meet equally determined members of their own sex in conference. |
