Show CONSERVATIVES TRIUMPH. The French elections for'menibers of the chamber of deputies have resulted in what may be described' as a triumph tri-umph for the conservative groups.. Complete returns are not yet available-, but figures at hand show that tl;-eonservative, tl;-eonservative, moderate aud nationalist national-ist groups will control the new chamber. cham-ber. Combined, thes? elements may be said to comprise the party opposed to the extreme radicals. The Socialistic party, it is definitely established, has been signally defeated. So many ultra-conservatives ultra-conservatives have been eletei that the general result may be said to be a victory for the reactionary elements, since many of the progressive policies proposed by Premier Clcmenceau as post war measures for meeting changed national conditions have been stoutly oppoicd by most of the conservatives returned at the polling. Not since the national assembly was chosen in 1871 has the French chamber been so strong ly antiradical. Naturally the French elections' will exert a powerful influence "in Germany, where the already strong trend toward the 'conservative a'nd nationalist parties doubtless will be given additional stimulus, stim-ulus, with a corresponding; depressing effect on the -socialistic elements. The German Socialists have been entertaining entertain-ing hitfh hopes of help -from T ltv French radicals, even indulging :in expectations expecta-tions of a revolution in the French republic re-public as the prelude of a worldwide eruption politically. with the ultra-conservatives in control con-trol in the French chamber the relations rela-tions between France and Germany are hkely to take on a new character. It may be assumed that the overwhelming overwhelm-ing reactionary majority in the French chamber means that the inroniinjr government gov-ernment will exact the most rigid com pliance with the terms of the Versailles peace treaty. |
