Show BDXELFJEfl LAND values ps up Tiling of Large Area Followed Fol-lowed by Ten-fold Advance. BRIGHAM CITY, Nov. 21. Drainage is proving to be a valuable factor in Box-elder Box-elder county, especially near Brig ham City, in redeeming the productivity 0' the soil. Instances are cited where land values have jumped from $20 per acre before being tile drained to 200 per acre after being tiled. Land lying southwest of Corinne was entirely unproductive a few years ago and lav dormant. It was considered worthless worth-less until the tile-drain idea struck some of the wideawake citizens of this community, com-munity, and Is now producing some of the best crops in tne valley. E. W. Dunn, a member of the board of directors of the Corinne drainage district, gave out the foregoing information last night. Mr. Dunn is an ardent believer in tile drainage and has been instrumental in assisting the district to obtain big results. re-sults. Mr. Dunn says that in all there were lO.SfOO acres tile drained in the Corinne drainage district, at an approximate approxi-mate cost of $175,000. The land was owned by a number of the farmers near Corinne and at Brigham City. As soon as the district was created bonds were issued is-sued and work was begun. The land contained con-tained an excessive amount of mineral salt, or alkali. The tile drain remedied the condition and abundant crops are now being produced upon this otherwise worthless land. Since the Corinne drainage district took up the matter of reclaiming land and proved the idea successful, others also have drained and still others are now having their land drained. Two large ditching-machines are employed by a number of prominent farmers immediately west of Brigham City, and before the work is completed 550 acres will have been tiled. This district is being drained for the purpose of preventing the alkali from coming to the surface in sufficient quantity to injure the land. It has shown its presence for several years, and year by year has increased. . Another strip of land was tile drained last fall near the cement plant for the same purpose, and still another this spring immediately south of the cement plant. According to the best calculations, farming land in this vicinity promises to come well up to any farming land in the intermountain country when it Is all drained. |
