President Wilson is to confine his address to congress today to tho high rost of living problem and every man aiul woman in tho country will be deeply interested in what he has to say. Action upon the part of the government, govern-ment, however, has not been delayed pending the delivery of the address. It has ben announced that vriminal as oil as civil suits will be brought against the packers under the Sherman antitrust anti-trust law and under the section of the food control act making it unlawful to :r,;;rd food. The federal trade commission com-mission has' reported that stocks of food in storage this year are -0 per cent greater than a year ago, despite the fact that prices of practically all foods have shown large increases. A year ago the country was still at war, and the storage of vast quantities of food was justified. It is now held that the increased food storage is hoarding i or speculative purposes and the law lias been invoked to punish the speculators. specula-tors. Postoffice and postal employees ask a HO per cent increase, and the president has been asked to make the necessary recommendation to congress. Other demands are sure to follow. |
