L V ji ; - , Second Time for San Francisco Star to Win National Na-tional Title; Norman E. Brookes and Gerald L. Patterson, Undisputed Doubles Champions; Cham-pions; Standard of Play Is Higher Than for Number of Years. NEvy- YORK, Dec. ' 20. William M". Johnston of San Francisco heads the list of ranking players as determined de-termined by the ranking committee commit-tee of the United States National Lawn Tennis association, announced tonight. to-night. It is the second time Johnston has achieved this honor, as he was No. 1 in 1916. In their .order, the other members of the "first ten" are William T. Tilden II of Philadelphia, lehiya Kumagae of New York, R, Lindley Murray of Niagara Falls, Wallace F. Johnson of Philadelphia, Philadel-phia, Richard N. Williams II of Boston, Roland Roberts of San Francisco, Charles S. Garland of Pittsburg, Walter T. Hayes of Chicago and Watson M. Washburn of New York. To reach its decisions this year, the ranking committee announced It had to consider the records of more than 5n"i0 players, which indicates the remarkable revival of tournament competition throughout the country. Furthermore, the class of play was sb much higher than prevailed last year that players who actually had a better record In 1019 than a year ago may be farther down the list. High Standard of Play. This higher standard of play is due. in part, according to tne committee, to the return of men who were iu the service, and to the development of many promising promis-ing youngsters in all parts of the country. coun-try. It was announced that only tho results re-sults of sanctioned tournaments were considered, and the committee was Instructed In-structed to rank solely on performance and not upon its opinion of players' ability. abil-ity. L;i te si-a.-on performances received more consideration than tnoe of early season. With reference to the Australian players, play-ers, tiie committee found that the matches played hy Gerald D. Patterson i and Norman K. Brookes indicated a class of about second and fourth places in the "Jirst t'-n"; Frederick B. Alexander of New Yrk n I so stood well up, but, iu view of their short records, they were not ranked. Similarly, It. V. Thomas and k'-indolph Byeett won id have found places farther fhwu the list. In doubles, however, their record was conclusive, and. therefore, Brookes and Ba tt ersiMi top t no list of ran li ing teams. Their niaririn over the neM nesl team. J.ih list on and Cril'iin, was siifih'icnt to leavo no doubt in the committee's mind. AU'xaiii-k r and Voyiiell occupy third 'place, the other teams in the "first ten" being : i T. C. Bundy--M. E. McLaughlin, Los i Angeles. Robert Klnsey-IIoward Kinsey, San Francisco. ; R. N. Williams-W. M.- Washburn, New I York. Vincent Richards-W. T. Tilden II, Philadelphia. Axel Gravem-Robert Kinsey, San Francisco. Fran-cisco. I. Kumagae-B. C. Wright, New York. Leonard Beekman-W. M. Hall, New York. The general excellence of plav In the men's events was paralleled in those for women, and there, again, it was hard to rank some individuals. The present champion. Mrs. George W. Wightman of Boston, heads the ranking, with Miss Eleanor Goss of New York, second. Mrs. Franklin Mai lory (Molla Bjurstcdt) comes next, her defeats early in the year having been partially retrieved later. The others who comprise the "first ten" are: Miss Marion Zinderstein. Boston. . Miss Helen Baker, San Francisco Mrs. Edward Raymond, Ilartsdale j N. Y. I Miss Helen Gilleaudcau. Mamaroneck. Miss Marie Wagner, New York. I Miss Corinno Gould, St. Eouis. j Miss Helen Pollak, New York. Omit Division Into Classes. The committee recommended that sanction for tournaments for ' spring be refused to about eighteen clubs which failed to file reports of their scheduled events. In omitting a division Into classes, the committee was moved by the closeness of competition this year to declare that any such division is more or less arbitrarv Its renorr. stated: "The difference In the rate of each consecutive con-secutive p'nyer on the ranking list is so slight (with the exception of the ch;i rn-pions) rn-pions) that the committee feels it would work an Injustice to separate them by classes. " Fo r Ins t.a nee. the h" rs t m an in an y class would he nearer the point nf excellence excel-lence of the Inst man in the preceding class titan 'of the last man in bis own class.
