EIGHT vears of service without being be-ing abseut from his duties a night, except during vacation time, is tho record of Lieutenant of Polic;; AVilliani Keyting o the Salt Lake police department. iSo regular in his movements is Lieutenant Xeyting that the night shift men set their watches and line up preparatory to leaving for their ''beats" at 10:45 o'clock when he makes his appearance at tho station. Lieutenant Keyting has been in charge of the safety of Salt Lake residents res-idents during the night since he first came to the department in February ; 1912. Empowered to act as night chict of police by B. F. Grant, at that time newly appointed as chief, Lieutenant Keyting has performed that duty along with his other work of desk sergeant and bail commissioner. Thousands of Salt Lake citizens have appealed to Lieutenant Keyting for aid during the night for protection against burglars, thugs and prowlers. Many have appeared at tho police station sta-tion and have met him personally. Others have told their troubles to him over the telephone, and aro familiar with his "Po-kece sta-shun. " Lieutenant Keyting has booked thousands of all classes of thieves, from the lowest police classification, that of a petty thief, to tbe suave "con man.'' Because partiality is unknown to Lieuteuant Keyting he is respected by the policemen geuerally. A year ago on Christinas Lieutenant Kevtiug was presented with a gold badge bv Chief of Police J. Parley White. On the back of the badge is tbe inscription: "To "William Keyting, Christmas, 191 S, from the boys. ". '. Tt is with this spirit of cooperation and respect for each other that Lieutenant Lieu-tenant Keyting aud the members of the night shift have succeeded in guarding guard-ing the lives aud property of the people peo-ple of Salt Lake for eight years. |
