Show UTAH-APEX MINE IS AGAIN ON FIRE Blaze Doing Much Damage in Valuable Bingham Property, Machinery Being Removed. Special to The Tribune. BINGHAM, May 28. Fire lias again broken out in tho Utah-Apex mine. Firo was reported In the mine yesterday by miners, but after a brief investigation tho officials decided that the trouble was the result of a gas explosion in the lower levels of the property. Later It was learned that fire really had broken out and il has been rouKht continuously since the discovery. Many men have been overcome by the smoke, but there have been no fatalities. The fire was first bulkheaded in on Ihe 1300, 1350 and 1400 levels, but has succeeded suc-ceeded In breaking out again. The mine is being flooded and the pumps and other iron and steel mining machinery are being be-ing removed, so that the copper water will not destroy them. Water Is being run into the shaft in large amounts and the mine is laving off all men who are not absolutely necessary to help fight the fl'e. , -j It is reported that the L tah Copper company has made arrangements to take over the Apex miners until the trouble I ended and they can go back to work. Fire broke out in the Apex mine last vear on March 84. The total cost of the tire at that time was estimated at the Boston office at $30,000. The fire caused the laving off of more than 450 men for a period of three months and reduced the total vear's output of the mine from S710.-7"4 S710.-7"4 in 191P to $334,000 for 1917. |
