Show DRAPER HOME BAND j MUSICIANS ARE HERE J H. Jr. Draper, who, with his wife, founded the. Draper Home fur Children at Des Moines, yesterday secured permission per-mission from Chief of Police J. Parley Par-ley White for his children's band to play upon the streets of Salt Lake for several days. Members of this band range in age from 6 to 13 years, and, in most instances, are either orphans or have been deserted by one or the other of their parents. ! The party, thirteen in number, has traveled from Fallon, Nev., to Salt Lake in a bin truck, and will continue on their trip Thursday. In referring to the work of the home, Mr. Draper said: "I was formerly in charge of a children's home in' Michigan, but the law of that state says no illegitimate children shall be taken into an institution insti-tution of that ' kind. It also forbids the acceptance of infants under six months of age. 1 thought that such children needed care as much as others, and so Mrs. Draper and I started out iu hopes that we could found a home of our own. We located it at Des Moines, eleven years ago. "Since that time we have had difficulty dif-ficulty financing the institution, but we have kept it going. We have taken care of an average of about twenty-five twenty-five inmates since its establishment. Prices are so high now that we have been compelled to go on the road to obtain the money to feed the children. At the present time my wife is in Nebraska Ne-braska with a . band of sixteen children, chil-dren, while I have twelve with me,'' The youngsters eomposin the band are a nice appearing lot of children, and seem well trained. |
