Show LIBERTY LAUNCHINGS. The greatest possible amount of enthusiasm en-thusiasm has developed in shipbuilding circles, and from Hurley and Schwab down to the laborers in tho yards all is hurry and bustle. There is intense rivalry ri-valry among the riveters, upon whom so much depends, and uew speed records are being claimed almost every day. Many new vessels have been launched and hundreds more are now on the ways. In view of this latter fact, it is proposed pro-posed to make July 4 the greatest ship-launching ship-launching day iu the history of the world. The San Francisco yards will bo ready to slide nine vessels into the water, and Director General Schwab and Commissioner Colby will be present to take part in the interesting and notable no-table event. Some will be destroyers for the navy and others steamers for the emergency fleet corporation, but they will all be used for the purpose of helping win the war. It is fitting that the anniversary of the signing of tho Declaration of Independence should be observed in this manner, for, while the declaration brought independence to the thirteen struggling American colonies, the ships are destined to bring freedom free-dom to the entire world. It should be a gala day at the yards in the vicinity of Philadelphia, where the immortal document was promulgated on July 4, 1776, |
