Show HOLIDAYS WAIVED TO SPEED SHIPBUILDING WASHINGTON, May 23. The customary cus-tomary Saturday half holiday during the months ox June, July and August has been waived by unanimous vote of the Portland, Ore., metal trades council, coun-cil, in order to speed the work of building build-ing ships. The men agreed to take straight pay instead of time and a half for holiday work, if necessary. Notification of the council 's action, telegraphed today to the shipping board, resulted iu the passing of a resolution res-olution thanking the representatives of organized labor for their patriotic and co-operative spirit. f labor councils in other cities should follow the example set in Portland, Port-land, the result woul mean the addition ad-dition of many shipB to the board 's building program. As more than 300,-000 300,-000 men are now employed in American Ameri-can shipyards, the total result of their labor for even half a day is enormous. |
