Francis' ("Silk) u iougnun, lamous as an American league umpire, died at his apartment here today after a short illness of influenza and pneumonia. O'Loughlin had been an umpire in the American league since its organization and he had long been rated as one of the picturesque figures in tho baseball world. His "ball tuh." his long-drawn-out "b-t-r-i-k-e," and snappy "fouled-er" are known the country over. These and a series of oiher exclamations accompanied by gestures to indicate a player as safe or out at bases were peculiar to O'Eough-lin. O'Eough-lin. He was born in Rochester, N. Y.. forty-eight forty-eight years ago. In 1902 he was appointed appoint-ed by Ban Johnson as an American league umpire. |
