"But there will still bo oanso for Thanksgiving, for it is a great thing to have rod-blooded, patriotic youug men ready to fight in the cause of freedom and humanity; to have a country rich enough to equip thorn for service; productive pro-ductive enough to food its vast army and also its allies; for a wise ruler, capable ca-pable of directing his country in it a great crisis. And along with tho prayer of thanksgiving thanks-giving will go the petition to tho Great Father of Ail that the cruel conflict will not be prolonged, and that tho forces of right and justice may bo strong enough to overcome the enemies of peace and liberty. Entertainments given the "past week and those forecast for this week, show the atmosphere of the Thanksgiving season in favors and decorations with the time-honored king of the feast, the turkey, much in evidence in reality and in miniature replica on place cards, favors fa-vors and in bonbon boxes. Many quiet home dinners will be given in honor of the festival on Thursday, Thurs-day, when families and close friends will gather together, and good cheer will prevail in spite of the depression caused by the great war cloud. NOW that society is devoting its time, its wealth and its energy to the call of a war-stricken country, it seems fitting that historic Amelia Pal-ace, Pal-ace, the scene of so much brilliant social -xt activity, should be turned into Red ,'Vross headquarters. Built by the found- " er of the Mormon church in Utah, Brig-ham Brig-ham Young, for his favorite wife and named for her, and later owned by one of the wealthiest women of the west, its associations have been interesting and magnificent. With the same giaciousness with which she has welcomed guests within its hospitable portals, its generous mistress, mis-tress, Mrs. Edwin F. Holmes, the past week invited the Red Cross society of Salt Lake to take possession of her former for-mer home to carry on its great work. Tn the same rooms where merry feet have responded to the music of the dance, where bright conversation and joyous laughter have been heard, busy lingers will roll Red Cross bandages, under expert direction, and practical garments . will be made and packed ready to send to hospitals abroad. Many of the same women, and young girls who have been the life of social ; functions in the palace will help to ! make the bandages and ply the needle and sewing machine in the service of their country. For American women of whatever station have always been noted for their adaptability to meet conditions, ajid the society woman, instead in-stead of lying in bed in the morning, is now out early and off to a Red Cross meetiug. The same automobiles which have carried car-ried their mistresses in rich attire to Amelia Palace for social functions, will . r "now stop there to allow the same worn-eu, worn-eu, plainly clad, to enter it on a more 1 i' serious mission. V THE annual Pioneer ball under the auspices of the three pioneer organizations or-ganizations of the city, the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, Daughters of the Mormon battalion and Daughters of the Handcart Pioneers, will be given Wednesday Wed-nesday evening at the Bishop's building. build-ing. Aside from the dancing a splendid splen-did programme will be given. Refreshments Refresh-ments will be served. The committees in charge of the eu tertainment are as follows: Reception Mrs. Maria V.
