LENNON BEATEN FOR TREASURER Effort to Make It a Pacifist Victory Fails ; Convention Conven-tion Fails to Get Through With Work. JFVTFFALO, X. Y., Nov. 24. Samuel I Jumpers, president of t lie American l-'edrrntiorj of-' Labor , for thirty -five yours, was re-elected today, virtually without opposition, and with him the other officers, except John B. Lennon, treasurer, who was defeated by Danial .1. Tobin, president of the International Teamsters' and Chauffeurs5 union. An effort to read into the defeat of M r. Len non, a weakening of the position posi-tion of I 'resident Gompers us a leader and u part victory for the small group of pacifists which has opposed him, was (couted by prominent federation off i-cits. i-cits. It was declared that when it was decided by Tobin 'a friends to run him for the office, Compcrs announced an unequivocal policy of hands off. ; It was further stated that the unions which lined up against Gompers on the j indorsement of his war policy early in. the convention, today divided, the majority ma-jority of them vuting for Lennon. The vote for treasurer stood: Tobin, 13,476; Lennon, 9102. Tobin drew his strength principally from the teamsters, miners, machinists, carpenters, bridge and struc- i tural iron workers and brewery workers. 'Not a Pacifist. To make his position clear, Mr. Tobin in accepting office declared there was no "pacifism and autism'5 in him. ".ince war was declared," he said, "1 have tried to carry out the wishes of President Gompers of the American federation of Labor and President Wilson Wil-son of the. United States. I want no misunderstanding as to my position. With thousands of men in our union, there has not been one strike. "We have not crippled industry during the war. We have been fighting an enemy from whom we ma.y expect no mercy if he is victorious. We are trade unionists, but we are Americans first, and should be willing to make any sacrifice in this cause. I am human and have aspired for this office iu doing so I have done no wrong. " Gompers Pledges Loyalty. This statement was greeted with cheers, and there was another demonstration demon-stration when President Gompers pledged his undivided loyalty and effort ef-fort to the cause of men who toil "in the most crucial period in the history of labor and of the world.'5 No liberty-loving man, ho said, would nsk or seek peace now until the purposes pur-poses for which the United States entered en-tered the conflict have been accomplished. accom-plished. ''We have declared ourselves in the light for freedom and democracy, and there is no doubt where union labor stands. ' ' he said. There were a few scattering votes against Mr. Gompers and one against Frank Morrison for secretary. !
