Show SOLDIERS OF RED CROSS. 'Soldiers of the Red Cross in Salt Lake are fighting as gallantly and as effectively ef-fectively as the soldiers of Great Britain in Picardv, the soldiers of France on tlio Aisno or the soldiers of Italy on the Piave and Brcnta. Because the work of the Bed Cross soldiers is not a work of destruction, because it is designed to save human lives and thereby add strength to the allied cause it becomes a war work of the ldghest value. "Somewhere irj France" men are dying dy-ing for wunt of surgical dressings. " Somewhere in .Italy" and France lives have been saved, are being saved every day by the work of the American Bed Cross, not merely the work at the front, but by the work thousands of miles from the battlefield. Those who have enlisted in the service in Salt Lake and Utah should keep that idea in their minds. Every woman who makes surgical sur-gical dressings lightens human pain or perhaps saves a human life. There is not a woman in Salt Lake who, if some dying soldier appealed to her for aid, would not lend instant and loving assistance. And the greater the wounded man's need, the greater sacrifice sacri-fice she would make to save his life. And every day women of Salt Lake, soldiers sol-diers of the tied Cross, are giving that kind of aid just as truly as if they were on the battlefield. The work is no trivial task. It requires re-quires conscientious application, self-sacrifice, self-sacrifice, and often self-effacement. It requires that those who have been wont to command should humbly take their places in the ranks with no thought of self and do the tasks assigned to them. Necessarily there must be discipline and rule. Necessarily things must be dono in a certain way so as to co-ordinate perfectly per-fectly and efficiently with the requirements require-ments and standards established abroad. We may not always understand why certain things must be done in certain ways, but we can bo sure that all the regulations of the government arc dictated dic-tated by the exigencies abroad. It is unity of purpose and of system unity in all lines of work that will bring :ho allies victory. The soldiers of the Bed Cross here and all over the country have voluntarily volun-tarily submitted to the rules and regulations regu-lations so that they may tho more efficiently ef-ficiently serve their government and the wounded soldiers of Europe. And soon their work will be preserving American lives upon the fields of Krance. Their work will restore many a mother's son to his mother after the cruol war is over. War has become more hideous than ever in its battlefield aspects, but there is one aspect of war that still remains beautiful and glorious. Tt is the work of the soldiers of the Bed Cross and of the other ministers of mercy who alleviate the sufferings of the stricken heroes. |
