Show FIVE II FREEZE TO DEATH WV YORK Great City Experiences the Coldest Weather in History His-tory of Weather Bureau. 1 NEW YORK, Dec 30. When tlie thermometer ther-mometer went to 13 below zero today, New York experienced the coldest weather weath-er in the history of the local weather bureau. There was general suffering because be-cause of coal shortage. Six below zero was the former low mark. Five deaths due to cold were reported and many persons per-sons suffering from frost bite were treated treat-ed at hospitals. Fog over the harbor I virtually suspended water traffic. Hun- j dreds who had no coal took refuge in 1 police stations, but, as few are out of work, the demands on charitable institutions insti-tutions were not heavy. The coal short- ; age was made more acute because men could not be secured to handle fuel at New Jersey terminals. In the tenements the tenants crowded into the rooms of those who had fuel, making the heating arrangements a community affair. Volunteer Volun-teer workers did their best to relieve cases of acute distress. Thei twelve Keith theaters in New York and Brooklyn were thrown open tonight to the poor in search of warmth. Two men were frozen to death In Brooklyn during the day, making a total of five to succumb because of the cold. GLENNS FALLS, N. Y., Dec. 30. Unofficial Un-official reports from the northern section of Warren county stated that the temperature tem-perature this morning ranged from 52 to 69 degrees below zero, the latter mark at Thurman station. Just outside Glenns Falls it was 40 degrees below. The official low mark in Glenns Falls was 34 degrees below zero. It was the coldest day here since January 6, 1904, when the official mark was 36 degrees below. PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 30. With temperature tem-perature ranging from 4 to 25 degrees below zero, eastern Pennsylvania today experienced the coldest weather In many years. There was considerable suffering in many places, due to the shortage of coal. Both the production and movement of anthracite coal were slowed up by the intense cold. Collieries were making every effort to prevent the freezing of workings, work-ings, but it was feared that a number would be unable to operate tomorrow. ELKTNS. W. Va., Dec. 30. The coldest December 30 on record here was reached by the official government observer earlv this morning, when the thermometer fell to 27 degrees below zero. WASHINGTON.
