Wallace Dies From Draught Taken for Cough Mixture. MISTAKING a bottle containing a solution of carbolic acid and collodion col-lodion for a bottle of cough medicine, medi-cine, Miss Helen L. Wallace, the 17-year-old daughter Of Mr. and Mrs. William C. Wallace of 527 South Eighth East street, shortly after noon yesterday swallowed two tablespoonfuls of the mixture and fell In a faint to the bathroom floor, where she lay until found about an hour later by other members of the family who began a search for her when she failed to return to the sitting room within a reasonable time. The unconscious girl was rushed to the emergency hospital. Her family and friends administered emetics and antidotes anti-dotes while awaiting the arrival of the police auto, but Miss Wallace died just as she was being lifted from the stretcher to the operating table at the hospital. According to members of the family, the bottle containing the acid was kept in a medicine cabinet in the bathroom, which also contained the bottle filled with the solution that had been .prepared as a corn remover, and the liquids looked much alike, the collodion body of the corn remedy rem-edy giving it a thick brownish appearance appear-ance similar to a cough syrup. The bottles bot-tles containing the liquids were almost identical. Just how long Miss Wallace lay In the bathroom is not certain. It is said that the mixture she drank acts as an anesthetic and it is believed she fell in a swoon almost instantly and was not able to call for help. Miss Wallace was employed by the John Elliott Clark company. She ie survived by her parents, two sisters. Miss Edna W. Wallace and Mrs. George Peterson, and a brother. Reginald C. Wallace, who is in the service in France. Her father, William C. Wallace, had .iust returned to Idaho Falls, Idaho, two days ago after spendmg the Christmas Christ-mas holiday with his family. He was at once notified of the death of his daughter daugh-ter and is expected to arrive in this city this morning. He is local representative in the Idaho city of the Consolidated Wagon & Machine company. |
