PARIS, lee. C. (Viy maiO A memo rial to the memory of James A. McCon-nell, McCon-nell, the Carthage, N. C boy, member of the 1-at'ayette escadrille. who was killed while fighting on t he Krench front last spring, has been erected by the citizens of lbim. the small French town near which, t he American fell in flames. The citizens subscribed to the memorial to the aviator, who was brought down while chasing a squadron of Herman machines ma-chines intent on bombing Ham, The little town was one of those delivered from (Jerman h:inls as the rtsult of the battle of the Quinine, when Himlenburg was forced to retreat on his "elastic front." A stone and cement tomb mark the exact spot where McConnell dropped. At one end is an arch with a cross beneath ii and at the ot her a copper piate wit h an inscription detailing the aviator's record rec-ord and his death for France. Although Han; raised the monument voluiua rily. it is understood that t lie Krench government has made suggestions to other municipalities t hat they also erect tombs for the American aviators who have met death in France while fighting at the front. |
