Successful community development and advertisement can best be gained through the interest of every man in the community, big and little, declared Rufus E. Wilson, expert in community ; publicity, who spoke yesterday noon to the members of the Salt Lake Ad club I on ''Fflective Community Advertising' ' Mr. Wilson was the guest of honor at , the weekly luncheon of the club in the .Newhouse hotel. Movements in which a very few men bear the financial burden rarely terminate termi-nate successfully, the speaker said. He expressed the opinion that the common failure of many commercial clubs and similar civic organizations was due to the fact that the ' 4 little men " were seldom invited to contribute their small shares. Where comparatively poor men have contributed as low as 50 cents to development work they are bound to take a greater interest in it. he said. Mr. Wilson was a newspaper man for many years, and from that work naturally natu-rally became interested in advertising and commercial club work. For a number num-ber of years Mr. Wilson was secretary of the Seattle Commercial club, where he won an enviable reputation in community com-munity development work. Later he organized the Washington Development league, an organization of civic bodies in that state which did some successful work. The town of Eureka, Cal., later engaged en-gaged him as ' press agent ' ' to carry out a publicity campaign. A fund of $52,000 was raised in the town of 20,000 population, and in a year's time the town became widely known on the Pa- icifie slope through effective publicity. j Mr. Wilson devoted a number of years to land projects throughout tho west land Mexico, becoming thoroughly fa- i miliar with the entire country. At the present time he is connected with a large eastern advertising agency, and is making a western tour representing that agency as an expert in community development, de-velopment, through publicity. He is lecturing lec-turing on ways to make industrial and civic surveys and on how to raise funds for publicity campaigns. |
