Show FIRST WHITE HOUSE F1CTI10F SEASON President and Mrs. Wilson Give Brilliant Reception; 4000 Persons Attend. WASHINGTON", Jan. 7. A brilliant reception, given at the White house tonight to-night by President and Mrs. Wilson, crowned the social attentions paid visiting vis-iting delegates to the Pan-American Scientific congress during the past two weeks, In numbers present and in splendor the affair surpassed anything of the kind seen in Washington in recent re-cent years. Martial music and handsome costumes cos-tumes lent color lo the scene. .For more than three hours Latin-American Latin-American scientists and diplomats, government gov-ernment officials, members of the senate, sen-ate, and house, jurists and other invited guests passed down the receiving line in a steady stream. By the side ot the president stood bis bride of less than three weeks, who tonight made her first lormal appearance as mistress of the White house. Mrs. Wilson, smiling smil-ing continually, as she shook hands with the guests, wore a magnificent white satin gown with a long train, brocaded in silver. The reception was held in the historic his-toric blue room, but the entire first floor of the mansion was thrown open to the guests. Thev assem,blod in the east room and passed through the green room to the receiving line and through the red room to the great state dining room, where a bufl'et supper was served. In the entrance hall was assembled the red-uniformed marine band, playing stirring music. More than 4000 men and women shook hands with the president, and at times the carriage line outside extended ex-tended six blocks away. Member.s of the cabinet and other especially invited guests assembled early, ear-ly, and long before 9:30 o'clock, the time set for the opening of the reepp-tion, reepp-tion, the east entrance of the White house was crowded. Military and naval aides in full dress uniform were on duty at all points and directed tho crowd. Before the arrival of the official receiving- party the parlors' par-lors' were fell tilled with members of congress and their wives and prominent ofhia.ls and diplomats. The Appearance of tho president and Mrs. Wilson was heralded by a fanfare fan-fare of trumpets, followed by the "Star Spangled Banner." All eyes were turned towa nl t he main si airway from the second floor. Preceded by the military mili-tary and naval aides, the president and his wife appeared, walking slowly down the stai rway and into the blue room. They were followed by the vice president presi-dent and Mrs. Marshall and the members mem-bers of the cabinet with their wives, led by Secretary and M.rs. Lansing. Mrs. Vvillinm G. McAdoo, daughter of the president, occupied a place in this line as the wife of tiie secretary of the treasury.
