Show CARDINAL MERCIER WILL GO TO ROME He Is Notified That He Will Be Permitted Per-mitted to Return to Belgium Without Question. HOME, Jan. 7, 3:45 p. m. The Belgian Bel-gian minister to the Vatican has been informed that Cardinal Mercier, primate pri-mate of Belgium, intends to leave for Rome after presiding at the consecration, consecra-tion, to tako place m a dav or two, of the new ljishop of Tournar. Cardinal Mercier abandoned the idea of coming to Rome last month, because he was Unable to obtain guarantees that he would be permitted to return to Belgium. Having applied to General von Bissing, military governor of Belgium, Bel-gium, for guarantees, he was informed that they could come only from Berlin, although the general gave hun such assurances as-surances as he could. The response from Berlin came too late to enable the cardinal to attend tho consistory, but he has now been informed officially from Berlin that no obstacle will be raised to his return to Belgium. It is expected that the cardinal will arrive here about January lo. He will reside at the Belgian college during his stay here. Pope Benedict has been notified of his expected arrival. |
