Show SUGAR PROBERS ON TREIR WAYTO CUBA 1 Complete Report of Industry Indus-try Expected as Result of Investigation. j WASHINGTON, Jan. 7. An investigation investiga-tion of the world's sugar industry by department de-partment of commerce experts is expected to produce soon the most complete report on ah phases of sugar production ever put before congress. The work is being done bv agents of the bureau of foreign and domestic commerce, which fell heir to the duties of the old tariff board. Investigators just back from Hawaii palled today for Cuba for field work. In Hawaii the agents said growers opened up their books when they found trade secrets would not be disclosed . in the forthcoming report and government scientists scien-tists co-operated in getting at production methods. Information gathered will he compiled in "Washington and added to knowledge of the industry gained in previous investigations investi-gations of Louisiana production. Results of the Inquiry are expected to show just what tariff, in Bny, is needed to protect the industry in the United States, and its possessions. The bureau hopes to have the work done before congress acts upon a pending resolution to extend the existing exist-ing sugar tariff, which is terminated under un-der the new law May 1 next. The eugar Inquiry has been conducted bo quietly that few outside the department had learned !t was under way. The first investigation by the bureau after it took up the work of the tariff board was that of the pottery industry, on which an exhaustive report has been made. Other inquiries now under way concern con-cern muslin underwear manufacture, shirts and collars and men's clothing and textile machinery. Metal production will be taken up next and an investigation of the glass industry Is planned. |
