Show GLADE DECLARES IE 13 fimiOITE Says Ha Is Not Even in Favor Fa-vor of Having Prohibition Prohibi-tion Commissioner. Earl J. Glade, .secretary of the Prohibition Prohibi-tion and Uet teianer t league, entered a vigorous denial yesterday of the report t ha t he was a candidate for the position of prohibition commissioner of Utah. In bis denial. Mr. Glade not only denies his candidacy for the position, but asserts that he Is not in sympathy with the com-misslonr-j- feature of the proposed measure now under discussion in the lower house uf I he state legislature. "1 am eon v in red," Mr. Glade declared last ni'bl, "that t he present, state organization or-ganization is thoroughly con ipe root to handle prohibition in b'tah. Both before and since t he elect ion -I have bad occasion occa-sion lo study the effects of prohibition in Idaho and the conditions found there have led me, lo believe Die expense incident to the crea i ion of a special depa rLment to enforce the terms of the act is unnecessary. unneces-sary. "I do not r lies Hon the advisability of some person assuming charge of the various vari-ous reports required by the proposed measure, but 1 am sure that the. law can and will be entVoced by the officers now in charge. In this connection there is an item to be taken into consideration which, I believe, has been overlooked by many ardent prohibitionists. When liquor is no longer on sale the volume of crime of all classes will decrease very materially and the officers will have more time to give to the provisions of iho prohibition law. "Although the Prohibition and Fetter-ment Fetter-ment league is not entirely satisfied with the bill now under discussion in the bouse, we w'ant prohibition above everything else. We are working with the sponsors of the measure that has been introduced and I believe we will eventually get together. to-gether. "Personally, T am not in favor of adding the expense of a prohibition commissioner and bis department to the administration of the Plate's affairs, especially at a time when ret rencliment is not only a party pledge, but a necessity." |
