Show PERM II FIGHT II PARTYJLEADERS Declares Split Between Republican Re-publican and Progressive Organizations Is as Wide as Ever. NEW YORK, Jan. .). Gcovge W. Perkins, chairman of the National Progressive Pro-gressive party; issued a statement here tonight in winch he declared that "the several actions taken this afternoon" by the executive committee of the Republican Re-publican national committee, over the protest of Chairman Willcox and other members of the committee, had failed to heal the breach between the Republican Republi-can and Progressive parties. This, he added, left no doubt that the split between be-tween the Republican and Progressive parties was as wide open as ever. Mr. Perkins and several other Progressive Pro-gressive leaders failed to attend a dinner din-ner given tonight by Chairman Willcox of the Republican national committee. Perkins's Statement. Mr. Perkins's statement said, in part: "At 7 o'clock tonight, we withdrew our acceptances to Mr. Willcox 's dinner to the Republican executive and campaign cam-paign committees. "We did this because of the several actions taken this afternoon by the executive ex-ecutive committee over the protest of Chairman Willcox and other members of the committee. "It is too late this evening to cover the matter properly in a statement. We will do this tomorrow. "Briefly, the action of the executive committee was a deliberate and wilful reflection upon Chairman Willcox and an affront to every Progressive voter in the country." Cause of Split, The selection today of John T. Adams of Jowa to be vice chairman of the Republican Re-publican national committee was reported re-ported tonight to have been in opposition opposi-tion to the wishes of Chairman Willcox and a victory for the so-called "old guard" faction of the party. Persons who claimed to be in close touch with the situation asserted that it might, create a dual control of party management, manage-ment, with Mr. Willcox in charge in the east and Mr. Adams in the west. Bevond the .bare announcement of Chairman Willcox that Mr. Adams had been named vice chairman, there was nothing prior to the issuance of Mr. Perkins's statement tonight to indicate that a disagreement had arisen between Republicans and Progressives over the action of the executive committee ..today. ..to-day. The statement issued by Mr. Perkins was issued by himself and Everett Colbv of New Jersey. When he learned of the statement issued is-sued by Mr. Perkins and Mr. Colby, Chairman Willcox first said he regretted they had not attended the dinner, as it was "strictly social" and had "no political po-litical significance." |
