Show WILLCOX FEELS SURE HUGHES IS TO REELECTED Claims Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin for Republican Nominee on Advices From Chairman Kert. SENATOR SHERMAN SENDS GOOD WORD Declares Speech of Former Justice at Springfield Was Like the Hit of a . Sledge Hammer. By International News Service. NEW YORK, Sept. 24. Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin were claimed for Hughes by Chairman Willcox of the Republican national committee today. He based his confidence on telegraphic advices from A. T. Hert, manager of the Chicago headquarters, head-quarters, and United States Senator Lawrence Law-rence Y. Sherman of Illinois. Mr. Hert wired: At the close of a week of travel through Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana Indi-ana with the Republican presidential nominee, I do not hesitate to predict that Mr. Hughes will carry each of the states by large majorities. Mr. Hughes has spoken in thirty-four thirty-four cities and towns of the middle west since last Tuesday. Three hun-- dred thousand people heard him. Thousands of others were unable to get the sound of his voice. His reception re-ception indicated there Is no Republican Repub-lican apathy In this part of the country. coun-try. Mr. Hughes" drew record crowds in Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana. Flattering Reception. His declaration in favor of protection protec-tion of American rights at home and abroad, his stand on the labor question ques-tion and on the protective tariff won him great applause in both industrial and agricultural centers. No more flattering reception was ever given a presidential candidate in Wisconsin than that accorded Mr. Hughes in Milwaukee last Wednesday evening. The size of that audience and the measure of Its enthusiasm was limited limit-ed only by the capacity of the great Coliseum. Indiana is not doubtful; it will go for Hughes and Fairbanks by an overwhelming majority In November. This claim Is amply substantiated by the great turnouts which have met the Hughes train at each of the thirty-two stops made In the Hoosier state, by the intensity of interest with which the various audiences followed the speeches and by the enthusiastic response that greeted Mr. Hughes's direct and unequivocal declaration both of principle and purpose. All Issues Discussed. On his second trip through 'the middle mid-dle west Mr. Hughes discussed all the Issues of the campaign and every speech won the applause, and often the cheers, of the crowds when he portrayed frankly the line of action he will follow when he becomes president. presi-dent. Never, in my opinion, has Indiana In-diana more cordially greeted any candidate can-didate for the presidency. The round of ovation after ovation has dispelled any possible doubt concerning how the people of this state feel toward our candidate. Before he entered Indiana the Republicans Re-publicans of the state, with an efficient effi-cient organization, under the leadership leader-ship of State Chairman Will H. Hays, had gotten their organization well under un-der way. That campaign has been given new impetus by irte visit of Mr. Hughes and we will, in fact, as he desires. lead and leceive the support of a reunited Republican party. Sherman's Tribute. Senator Sherman said: I have heard Ingersol!, Conkling, Blaine. Garfield and Logan and their successors. Governor Hughes's spee'.h at Springfield was the greatest I have heard In a lifetime. It hit like a sledge-hammer. It aroused a responsive respon-sive sentiment in the audience. Hughes has helped himself greatly and all th of rest of the the ticket in -the middle west. I rejoice with j you over the good result. j |
