With the pitchers in good form and the batting power increased, Chicago was able to win seven straight games until defeated by KL Louis Saturday. Detroit, with Cobb and Crawford both out for several days, won four games and lost one and gained the American league leadership Saturday. The hitting of Heilmann and Veach filled the void made by the absence of Cobb and Crawford. The series between New York and Boston Bos-ton gave the American league followers some excitement- The Red Sox were returned re-turned winners, but the two clubs are still almost ne'k and neck. The Red "Sox victories went to extra Innings. Yanks Are Hopeful. New York was weakened hy the illness of Gilhooley and Magee, but managed to keep up a good pace. The batting of N unama.lt er and Baker gave encouragement encourage-ment to the Yankee followers. Washington and Cleveland showed improved im-proved form and are makin? opposing teams hustle hard to win. Walter Johnson John-son won two games for the Senators. The hatting and fielding of Graney featured Cleveland's playing. Although Chicago's heavy hitters showed flashes of better batting form, the White Sox dropped slightly. The club's pitching staff appears weak. St. Louis failed woefully to m tain tain Its winning gait, and dropped five consecutive con-secutive gnmes. Fielder Jones's men seemingly have dropped off both in batting bat-ting and pitching simultaneously. Philadelphia still brings up the rear in the American lertgne. Louisville's .grrat winning streak put the Colonels far in front in tho American association and the rare is now strung out over a longer distance than at tho end of the first week.
