Show GREENRIVER LIGHT SYSTEM TURNED ON Citizens of Town Celebrate the Inauguration In-auguration of Electric Illumination. Sperial to The Trli une. GREENRIVER. Utah, Sept. 5. The citizens of this city last night rejoiceo and celebrated their victory, after a long struggle of nearly five years of continuous effort upon the part of the city government govern-ment to work out wavs and means of a successful lighting system. Several franchises for lights had been asked for, but always met opposition. At ia?t the citizens joined hands and every available means was brought into play so -that the city could own and operate li own light system. At last their efforts have been crowned with suceess. It was announced last Wednesday that the big transformer had come and the lights would be turned on at 6 o'clock Saturday. Several hundred people were on Broad-day Broad-day la.it night, waiting for Mayor Charles Mcpherson to push the button that would I light the whole city. Every electrician (was used and everything was in readiness when the mayor sent electricity through every street in this city. Bell? rang, whistles blew and hundreds of people came forward rejoicing. The mayor was picked up and carried over to Broadway, where a crowd awaited him w 1th the rest of the city "dads." and where ea-h of them made a speech. The i mayor announced that the keys of the city ' would be lost for the night and for ail i to enjoy themselves. A big free banquet was served and tons of the famous can-i can-i taloupes. watermelons and peaches were I piled up. everyone to help himself. I The- Midland trail from the big steel I bridge over the Green river to the west city limits is now a great "white way." The blaze of lights along the rouie will be met with approval by the tourists who come to the city after the long stretch of desert on both sides. |
