Republican politics from an organisation standpoint were Injected In-jected into the municipal campaign tonight to-night when it was decided, at a mass -meeting of votary to place a Republican j ticket In the field prior to the primary j election on October 19. Tho action of j the meeting took the form of a reaueat j that the city central committee arrange ; primaries and convention for the purpose j ' of nominating Republican candidates, j About 150 persons attended the meeting, which was called by George J. Kelly. chairman of the city central committee. I The action was not unanimous, nearly M twenty of those present opposing the plan ; to inject party politics into the city cam- I paii on the grounds tluit the commission i ' form of government was expressly de- j signed for non-partisan purposes. The method of reaching the decision also , caused considerable discussion, a resolu- I lion by Pr. A. S. Condon attacking the j present commissioners being voted down i by an overwhelming majority. Another Candidate. The meeting developed another candidate candi-date for the municipal race In the person Of M. L- Jones of the Third ward. In opposing the proposed action to name a I Republican ticket prior to the primary j election, Mr. Jones announced that he j had decided to make the race for four- i year commissioner to succeed Cftmmis- eicner T. S. Browning. This is the first announcement that haa been made since ! j Mayor A. G. Fell entered the race for a j If third term. 'I As chairman of the city central com- j mittee. former Senator Kelly named Cap- j tain E. T. Hulaniskl as chairman of the I I meeting. The preamble of the resolution j that failed to meet with the approval of 1 majority of those present waa aa fol-tews: fol-tews: In view of the painfully apparent fact that a small coterie of designing design-ing and financially interested persona has, since the establishment of the commission form of government In Ogden. controlled the nominations and elections in such manner as to give them an undue and unfair advantage ad-vantage at the expense of the people and to the willful and wanton disregard disre-gard of the people's rights, now. therefore, be it Resolved, That the Republican taxpayers tax-payers of this city, in mass convention, conven-tion, nominate candidates- to be voted on at the coming elections. To Bind Candidates. If A motion by John J. Walker to adopt ! the preamble with Its appendant provisions provi-sions finally met with defeat, and a roo-; roo-; lion to advfse the central committee to - call a convention prevailed. The object of the action, according to William Glas- 1 mann, former degressive leader, was to bind the candidates with a platform and - pledges to which they could be held after election. It was the opinion of Mr Jonea that li ail persons desiring to make the race should be given an equal opportunity to present their names at the primary, after which it would be the time to bind candidates candi-dates to a Republican platform. In announcing an-nouncing that he had decided to become, a candidate, he asserted that he would bind himself to any platform which was right and just that the Republicans might propose. His attitude was opposed by A. ! G. Horn and others, who said the time to do the binding was before the primary". pri-mary". No intimation was given by the chafr-man chafr-man of the central committee as to when the proposed Republican convention would be held. |
