Ho read from a manuscript which he had penciled on the train. ''The placing of the Democratic nar-tv nar-tv in power," he said, "and the adoption adop-tion of policies to which the majority of voters are o pposed . h as, I think, startled many of the dissentient Republicans Repub-licans into the conviction that whatever what-ever the merits of the Republican fight of 1912, it is time for them to resume their places in the Republican army, and we all rejoice to welcome them back. Cannot Control. ''But in the warmth of our welcome we should not lose sight of what their return, must mean. It means that they become Republicans again and that they cannot expect to support under the Republican rjarty banner anv but Republican party principles; that they cannot involve the old party in promo tion of those planks of the so-called Progressive party adopted in 191 'J. which never were and never will be supported sup-ported bv the national Republican par- "The truth is. the highest ambition of the modern Progressive statesmen, temporarily- in control of a state legis-latnre. legis-latnre. is Vty huggermugger of primary laws and with loud cries over the virtue vir-tue and beauty of nonpartisanship to formulate the qualifications in a party; so that a compact minority created by a political machine of state patronage may control the selection of all candidates candi-dates for all parties.
