TRADE EXPANSION. 0 While the foreifjn'demaml for wheat and flour so far ha the European countries coun-tries are concerned has ennsi'tcraidy lessened in the last few weeks, the ' nnimeree of the United States for the first seven months of the year shows a heavy increase when compared with the same period of 1914. Export trade in breadstuffa, cotton, meat and dairy prod nets and a few other staples has almost doubled in the time 'mentioned, tho heaviest and most remarkable increase being in breadstuf t's. The war ia responsible re-sponsible for much of this increase. American trade with South America was seriously disturbed during the earlier ear-lier months of the last fiscal year, but both exports and imports show a- considerable con-siderable increase of late. When the war in Europe ends our exports to the belligerent countries will suffer a material ma-terial decline, at least so far al food-.stuffs food-.stuffs and war munitions arc com-crned. On the other hand, it is expected that our trade with the South American republics re-publics will show a constant growth, no matter what happens on the other side of the Atlantic ocean. Wo should have invaded these markets long ago, but our own country was growing ho fast that all that was thought necessary neces-sary was to exploit he home market. Now that wo manufacture so much more than we can possibly consume, we must ba ve an out let for the surplus. South America is the most inviting field. Unfortunately we have no merchant .murine worthy of the name, and most of the American products find their way to the markets of the world in foreign bottoms.
