Show " JIHttY" SERVICE IS MM OGDEN Speetal lo The Tribune. OGDEN, Feb. 19. Without the necessity ne-cessity of a municipal license, ''jitnev' busses are uow being operated in tiis city. Taking advantage of the opportunity oppor-tunity afforded by the city commissioners commission-ers when they repealed the ordiuance providing for the licensing of passenger passen-ger automobiles operated for hire, the Jitney Service company today put tive cars in servieo on i.he principal streets of Ogden. The period of service under present conditions will be brief, as the new ordiuancei by which it is proposed to regulate "jitney" bus operation will be ready for passage early next week, according to Commissioner T. Browning. Brown-ing. The "jitney" ears which were placed in operation in this city today are of' the same style and make of five-passenger auto that was used in the original application of the plan in Pacific coast cities. Tho fare charged is also the same as that of tho street car. Two of the ears arc being operated as closely as possible on the street car schedule of the Washington avenue line between Tenth and Thirty-fifth streets. Two others aro operated on Twenty-fourth and Twenty-fifth streets between AVall and Harrison avenues, -while tho fifth is a machine held for service on call. Commissioner Browning declared today to-day that he was not prepared to announce an-nounce tho provisions of the proposed new ordinance, but it was learned unofficially unof-ficially that "an agreement has been reached betweeu representatives of the company and the city commission whereby the owners and operators of "jitnev" busses must pay an occupation occupa-tion tax. The amount of this proposed tax is not known. The ordinance will also contain other provisions relating to the use of the public streets. |
