WASHINGTON, Feb. 19. Representative Represent-ative Bartholdt of Missouri made his farewell speech ia the house today, denouncing de-nouncing the 'newspaper war against Lrermany. " lie declared Americans oi German descent "are with all other true Americans for America first, last aud always," and protested against American Amer-ican shipments of arms to the allies. "In our present demands against England," he said, "our only alternative alterna-tive is either to give in or to declare war. The threats of an embargo on arms, however, would quickly bring the mistress of the seas to terms without war. ' ' Portraying the "steadfast devotion of citizens of German blood to American ideals and the flag," Mr. Bartholdt declared: de-clared: If, unfortunately, the United States ever again should bo em broiled in war, which heaven forbid, for-bid, the Germans of this country would again as loyally rallv around the stars and stripes. The Germans Ger-mans of this country are for America Amer-ica against England, for America against Germany, for America against the world. They will never waver for one second in their allegiance al-legiance to their adopted land. Mr. Bartholdt said Americans of German Ger-man descent have been opculv accused of divided allegiance and downright disloyalty dis-loyalty and that they know that "this wanton insult emanated from England and French press agents, and thev treat it with contempt; they resent that in the face of our own history the American press should have opened its columns to such calumnies.
