Show SOME CONFUSION IN REGARD TO FINANCE James A. Pollock &. Co., bankers and brokers, furnish the following, received over their private wire yesterday afternoon after-noon : Paine, Webber & Co., Boston. In tho absence of a London market today our market was very dull and lluctuated within narrow limits. There was no news of any kind to sway market either way. We still believe stocks can be bought on any slight reaction. Logan & Bryan, New York. Price changes were negligible but the list presented pre-sented a firm appearance, though room shorts were the principal buyers. As the week ends there ls a noticeable disposition dis-position to regard the Mexican situation moro seriously, and then, too, strength of the coarse grain markets has directed direct-ed attention to the crop outlook, but so far the samo has not been reflected by much active selling. General sentiment ls becoming considerably mixed, owing to the fact that the stock market has onjoyed a rather substantial rally, and that, despite the action of the secretary of the treasury to deposit from $25,000,-000 $25,000,-000 to $50,000,000 in southern and western banks, It Is feared that easier money rates will produce a renewal of gold exports In the fall, as about the only means of protecting our supplies of the yellow metal at present Is the maintenance mainten-ance of firm rates, particularly for long term periods which would be quite difficult diffi-cult If Interior demands for funds were supplied with such freedom as to mako money rates In the east relatively easy. Completion of the tariff bill unci rmr- rency and banking legislation are anxiously anx-iously awaited, as is some definite indication indi-cation of the next turn in Mexican affairs, af-fairs, all of which may tend to produce some restraint, though on the whole, there does not seem to be sufficient warrant war-rant for a return to that pessimistic state which was in evidence some weeks ago. Gallagher, New York. Today's short session wa3 without feature. The oils were steady with a little activity. The coppers' tobaccos and industrials were extremely dull. Tonopah stocks remained firm with practically no trading. |
